Win back the carts shoppers leave at checkout

When a shopper types their email at checkout and leaves without paying, your store can send them up to three reminders, each with one button that opens that exact cart again. Turn them on under E-commerce, then Orders, Abandoned checkouts, and see the orders they bring back.

On this page

How recovery emails work

A shopper who typed their email at checkout and then left was close to buying. Recovery emails remind them, show them the bottles they picked, and take them straight back to that cart.

  1. They leave checkoutAfter typing their email, without paying.
  2. First emailAbout an hour later, unless you change it.
  3. Second email1 day later.
  4. Third email3 days later, with your code if you choose one.
  5. Back to the cartOne button opens that exact cart, ready to pay.

Every time is counted from the shopper’s last activity in checkout, and the emails stop the moment they pay.

Turn on recovery emails

Recovery emails are off for every store until you turn them on. Checkouts left before that moment are never emailed, so turning it on never sends anyone a note about an old cart.

Abandoned checkouts for Low Tide Wine Co., the sample wine shop, before recovery was ever turned on, with Recovery emails open. Turn on the switch, change a time or the discount, preview an email and Save. Every checkout already in the list stays Not emailed.
  1. Open E-commerce, then Orders. Choose Abandoned checkouts in the switch at the top of the page.
  2. Select Recovery emails. While recovery is off, the list also shows Turn on, which opens the same settings with the switch already on.
  3. Turn on Email shoppers who leave checkout.
  4. Check the timing and the discount. The defaults are a good start; both are explained below.
  5. Check Shop address, then preview each email. Preview email 1, 2 and 3 show each one as a shopper sees it. Nothing is sent.
  6. Select Save. The page header now reads Recovery emails on.

Your shop address comes first

Marketing email has to carry a postal address, so every reminder prints your shop’s. It comes from your default stock location under Inventory, Locations, or else the first pickup place on your Pickup delivery method. With none on file, Shop address says so and offers Open Inventory locations, and recovery cannot be turned on until you add one. See Inventory locations.

Choose when each email goes

Each time is counted from the shopper’s last activity in checkout, not from the email before it. With the defaults, the emails go about 1 hour, 1 day and 3 days after they left.

First email
30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or 4 hours. 1 hour unless you change it.
Second email
12 hours, 1 day or 2 days. 1 day unless you change it.
Third email
2 days, 3 days or 5 days. 3 days unless you change it.
  • In order. Each email has to go after the one before. Save says Send the third email later than the second when it would not.
  • The clock starts over. when a shopper comes back to checkout and leaves again.
  • A little after its time. Mirin sends the emails that are due in passes through the day, so each one arrives a little after its time, most often within 45 minutes.
  • Never in a burst. Two reminders about one cart never go out within 4 hours of each other.

Offer a discount in the third email

The first two emails remind. The third is your last word, and it can carry one of your discount codes for a shopper who is still deciding. No discount is chosen until you pick one.

One of your codes
Discount in the third email lists your active discount codes. With none, it offers a way to create one in Discounts.
Its own rules
The code keeps its dates, limits, minimums and the products it covers. The email includes it only while it is valid for that cart.
Put on the cart
When the shopper comes back through the third email’s button, the code goes on their cart if it is still valid.
Only the third
The first and second emails never carry a discount.

Make the code first

Create the code under E-commerce, then Discounts, with the dates, limits and minimum you want, then choose it in Discount in the third email. Read Discounts.

What the shopper receives

Each reminder looks like your own order emails, so the shopper knows who it is from before they open it. It greets them by first name when they gave one, and it shows exactly what they left.

The reminders Felix Romero gets from the sample shop after leaving two bottles in checkout. Switch between the three emails; the third carries the shop’s WELCOME10 code. Select Return to your cart to see the cart come back, or Unsubscribe from cart reminders to see the page a shopper lands on.
From your store
The sender is your store’s name, replies go to your support email, and the logo is the one on your order emails.
Their items
Each item in the cart with its photo, quantity and price, then the subtotal.
One button
Return to your cart opens that exact cart on your website, ready to finish. The link works for 14 days.
A one click way out
Unsubscribe from cart reminders stops them at once. Mail apps show their own unsubscribe button too.
Your address
Your shop’s postal address closes every email.
See it first
Preview email 1, 2 and 3 in the settings show each one built from your own brand and products. Nothing is sent.

Unsubscribing stops cart reminders only

After the one click, the shopper sees a page that says they will get no more cart reminders, with Turn cart reminders back on if they change their mind. Order confirmations and shipping emails still arrive as usual. See Store emails for those.

When the emails stop

A reminder only goes to someone who might still buy. The emails for a checkout end the moment one of these happens, and the list says which.

Paid for
The shopper finished this cart. The row reads Recovered when a reminder went out first.
Ordered separately
They placed another order at your store.
Opted out
They unsubscribed from cart reminders.
Cart emptied
They took everything out of the cart.
Out of stock
An item sold out or is no longer for sale.
Newer checkout
They started a newer checkout, which gets the emails instead.

Who never gets one

Your team
The website owner, team members, people you invited, your support address and the addresses your new order alerts go to. Their checkouts are tests.
Mirin staff and test addresses
Never emailed, whatever they leave in a cart.
Addresses that cannot take mail
Ones that bounced or marked an email as spam. Their row reads Stopped, Email bounced.
Sample carts
Carts from sample checkouts in the page builder never count.

Test it without emailing yourself

A checkout you or your team leave is listed as Stopped, Your team, and is never emailed. To see the emails, use Preview email 1, 2 and 3 in the settings instead.

Read the abandoned checkouts list

Every checkout where a shopper gave their email and left is listed, newest first, with where its emails stand. A checkout appears once it has been idle for an hour, or as soon as an email goes out for it.

Order #1048 at the sample shop, opened from Dana Whitfield’s recovered checkout. She came back through the third email, so WELCOME10 was already on her cart. Back to orders opens the Orders list, and the switch at the top returns to Abandoned checkouts.

Each number counts by its own date

Carts count by their last activity, emails by when they went out, and recovered orders by when they were paid. A cart left on the last day of the period can bring an order in the next one.

Common questions

Will this spam my customers?
No. Each checkout gets three emails at most, only shoppers who typed their email at checkout get them, every email has a one click unsubscribe, and they stop the moment the shopper buys.
Can I write my own email?
The emails are written for you and use your store’s name, logo and products automatically. You choose when each one goes and whether the third carries a discount, and you can preview all three before you turn them on.
Will turning it on email people about old carts?
No. Only checkouts left after you turn it on are emailed. Older ones stay in the list as Not emailed.
What happens when a shopper opens an old link?
The cart link works for 14 days, and only until that cart is paid for. After that it still opens your website, and leaves whatever is in the shopper’s cart as it is.
Does unsubscribing stop order emails?
No. It stops cart reminders from your store only. Order confirmations and shipping emails still arrive.
Will my own test checkout get an email?
No. Checkouts from you, your team, your support address and your new order alert addresses are never emailed. They show as Stopped, Your team.
Why does a checkout say Not emailed?
Recovery emails were off when the shopper left. Turning them on later never emails old checkouts.

Where the rest lives

Every paid order, recovered or not, is in Orders. The codes the third email can carry are in Discounts. Where shoppers leave between a visit and an order is in Store funnel.
