Shipping, delivery and pickup
Decide how orders reach your customers and what each choice costs. By the end your checkout offers the right delivery choices at the right prices, whether an order ships across the country, goes out on a local run, or waits at the counter.
Everything here lives in one place. Open E-commerce, then Settings, and work through Delivery Methods, Shipping Zones, and Carrier Accounts. We will follow a small coastal wine shop through all of it.
Delivery methods: what shoppers can pick
Delivery methods are the choices your shopper sees at the delivery step of checkout. Mirin supports three types, and you can offer any mix of them. Open E-commerce, then Settings, then Delivery Methods to manage them.
Shipping
A carrier takes the order anywhere your shipping zones cover. Priced by the rates you set in each zone.
Local delivery
You bring the order to nearby addresses yourself. Priced by a delivery fee you set, with an optional free delivery threshold.
Pickup
The shopper collects the order from one of your locations. No delivery charge for the shopper.
Delivery
Each method has a name, a description, and an Active toggle labeled Show this method at checkout. You write the name and description yourself, and you can drag methods into any order. Checkout lists them in the same order. Turn a method off and it disappears from checkout right away, with no other setup lost.
Standard shipping convert better than internal labels like Zone 1 flat.Zones say where, rates say how much
A shipping zone is a group of places you ship to. It can hold whole countries, individual states, or both. A rate is one priced option inside a zone. Zones answer where the order is going. Rates answer what the shopper pays to get it there. Manage both under E-commerce, then Settings, then Shipping Zones.
Add a Rest of world zone as the catch all. Any address that does not match a named zone falls into it, so a shopper you never planned for still gets a real price instead of a dead end.
Every rate carries a name, a price, optional conditions such as a minimum or maximum order value or weight, an optional description, and its own active toggle. The toggle lets you pause a rate for a while without deleting it.
The description is the line shoppers see under the rate at checkout. Write whatever fits your store, like a delivery window or a handling note. Rates saved before descriptions existed keep showing their estimated delivery day range until you give them a description.
The four rate types
Every rate prices itself in one of four ways. Pick the type when you create the rate.
- Flat rate
- One price for every order in the zone, no matter what is in the cart. Simple and predictable. The wine shop charges $8.00 flat for standard shipping.
- Price based
- The price depends on the order total. Set conditions like orders under $75 pay $8.00 and orders of $75 or more ship free. This is how you build a free shipping threshold.
- Weight based
- The price depends on the total weight of the cart. Useful when a full case costs far more to ship than a single bottle. Each product carries its weight on its Shipping card.
- Carrier calculated
- The carrier quotes a live price for the exact address and package at checkout. Needs a connected carrier account, covered below.
| In the cart | Order total | Shipping at checkout |
|---|---|---|
| One bottle of Bordeaux Rouge 2021 | $42.00 | Standard shipping, $8.00 |
| Two Bordeaux plus a Riesling Eola-Amity Hills | $96.00 | Free shipping, $0.00 |
Notice what the threshold does to the order itself. A shopper at $42.00 sees that one more bottle earns free shipping, and many will add it. The rate pays for itself in bigger carts.
Local delivery
Local delivery is for orders you bring to the door yourself. You define the area you cover in one of two ways. Set a radius in miles or kilometers around your location, or list the exact ZIP codes you serve. Shoppers with an address inside the area see the option at checkout. Everyone else simply never sees it.
With those three settings, an order under $50 pays the $5.00 delivery fee and an order of $50 or more gets free local delivery. That is exactly what the checkout line Free on orders over $50 within 10 miles promised in the first section. Prefer exact control over the map? Switch the area to a ZIP list and name every ZIP code you cover, nothing more.
Pickup
Pickup lets shoppers buy online and collect in person. Add one or more pickup locations, each with an address and instructions. Shoppers see both at checkout, so write the instructions the way you would explain them at the counter.
Main Street Tasting Room
12 Harbor Lane, Port Haven
Come to the counter with your order number. Most orders are ready within 2 hours.
Pickup orders skip tracking entirely. Instead of a shipping confirmation, the shopper gets a ready for pickup email when you mark the order ready, and the order confirmation tells them to watch for it. Both emails are covered in store emails.
Carrier accounts for live rates
Flat prices are a bet. Charge too little on a heavy case and you eat the difference. Charge too much and the cart gets abandoned. If your shipping costs swing a lot, connect a carrier account such as UPS and let the carrier quote each order live. Open E-commerce, then Settings, then Carrier Accounts.
Connect your account. Enter the credentials and account number from your carrier. Mirin checks them when you connect.
Set the origin address. Where packages leave from. Every live quote is priced from this address to the shopper.
Choose enabled services. Pick which of the carrier services shoppers can see, like UPS Ground or 2nd Day Air.
Set a default package size. The box dimensions used for quotes when an order has no better estimate.
Once the account is connected, add a rate with the Carrier calculated type to any zone. Shoppers in that zone see each enabled service with its live price, quoted for their exact address.
What the shopper actually sees
Checkout never shows every method and rate you have set up. It runs the same three checks on every order and lists only what qualifies.
The method is on
Its Active toggle shows it at checkout.
The zone matches
The address falls inside a zone that holds the rate.
The conditions pass
The order total or weight sits inside the range the rate asks for.
Free shipping promotions land at this same step. A free shipping discount created in Discounts drops the shipping charge to zero when the cart qualifies, so the shopper still picks a delivery choice but pays nothing for it.
The payoff. Set this up once and every checkout prices itself. The Portland shopper sees $8.00 or a free shipping nudge, the neighbor sees local delivery, the regular down the street picks up in person, and nobody ever emails you to ask what shipping costs.
